What it does well

Worth knowing

The case for it

A calorie target tells you how much to eat. It does not tell you what. Lifesum’s distinctive idea is to give you a way of eating as well as a number: you choose a plan, such as high-protein, Mediterranean-style or keto, and the app’s targets and food suggestions follow it. For people who find a blank daily budget hard to fill, that framework makes the first weeks easier, which is why Lifesum wins our diet plan award.

Design and logging

Lifesum started in Sweden and stands out for design: clean screens, generous use of colour and clear feedback on how a day is going. Food is logged by search or barcode, and recipes linked to your plan can be logged directly.

A note on plans

As with any packaged plan, check that the approach suits your health and preferences. Very restrictive plans are harder to sustain, and anyone with a medical condition should discuss diet changes with a clinician.

Where it sits in the field

Lifesum is tenth overall. It is the best finalist for people who want structure handed to them, but most plans are paid and its nutrient detail is lighter than the leaders’. PlateLens includes a recipe and meal planner with grocery lists alongside photo, voice, barcode and typed logging, for people who want to plan meals while keeping flexible tracking.

Who should pick it

  • People who want a structured eating plan, not just a calorie number.
  • People who value design and simple daily feedback.
  • People who like recipe suggestions matched to a goal.
